Toogood Farm Shop - Lancashire

If you like farm shops then this one should be in your 'top farm shops to visit' file. I'm always amazed at just how many different things I manage to spot each time I go there.

Toogood Farm shop, at Wrightington, is an Aladdin's Cave of food loveliness; from the 21 day matured beef and rare breed pork (both reared on the farm) to the locally reared lamb, Lancashire produced poultry and enormous selection of fresh and locally grown, seasonal vegetables...

Lots of the fresh fruit and veg stocked at Toogood are grown and sourced locally. An enormous choice to choose from!

Here you can see Samphire, Cabbages, Cauliflower, Broccoli and Peas all sourced from Lancashire (Asparagus UK sourced)

..the freezer and chiller cabinets are also just as full as the fresh sections: Mrs Dowsons ice cream, local, national and international cheeses, free-range eggs, bread (from The Old Bakery at Bretherton), Bowland butter, Chorizo, bacon, sausages, ready meals, milk and cream from Rowlands Dairy at Mawdesley, Cartmel sticky toffee pudding.......

There are very few ingredients you won't find: Maldon Sea Salt, Cider Vinegar, .....  ....Organic Flour, Noodles, Pasta, Soy Sauce, Olive Oil...and the list goes on and on!!

The Grand Opening!

I got along to Blackburn market this morning (July 9th, 2011). Although I actually arrived just before 10am, I somehow happened to miss the opening ceremony and the grand unveiling of the plaque....not to worry!

I still managed to press the flesh with Nigel Haworth just before he got stuck into his cookery demo. However, although I could see what he was doing, once he'd done his initial opening he put the microphone down and we couldn't hear a thing he said : (

Amongst the dignitaries on hand was Ex-Home Secretary, Jack Straw, who found time to wander round and buy some foodie treats. First port of call was Out of the Deep and a chance for owner, Christina Ellison, to show off the stunning array of fish and seafood she's so famous for...so what did he buy?....Kippers!!

mmmm, what should I have?

Are they fresh?

Thank You!

Arranged by the owner of Out of the Deep, Christina Ellison, Nick Cullen, from Nick's of Bolton, came along to demonstrate how to get the best out the superb seafood on offer at Tina's stall at the market.

Nick prepared a delicious fish stew using fresh hake, this was cooked in a really tasty Napoli style sauce with capers and olives.

Nick and his assistant also fried up some delicious fish goujons, these featured naturally smoked haddock coated in a crisp tempura batter and served with a sweet chilli and marmalade dipping sauce.

The finale was seared squid, simply seasoned with salt and pepper...nothing better!

A good tour round the other stalls netted some more tasty bounty:

Scott Stewart Fruit & Veg..I picked up
some lovely Lancashire potatoes,
mixed salad and tomatoes..

..and a call at Dales Butchers to see
Mark and Vicky where I bought some
Toulouse style sausage (not tried
these before)

I did have lots more but, unfortunately, my camera crashed and put an end to things. If you are visiting the market (and you really should) you'll find a brilliant range of really fresh, top quality produce and lots of it locally produced and reared.
