About Slow Food
Slow Food is an international, member-supported movement which came into existence in the late 1980s to counteract the effects of fast living, fast food and people’s declining interest in the food they eat.
Everyone is linked by the need to eat, yet too often the true pleasure of good food is forgotten. Countless recent news items report on the rise of convenience foods and the decline of knowledge about food and cooking, highlighting the need for us to get back to basics. In essence, Slow Food encourages people to slow down and start thinking more about where their food is coming from.
Within the UK there are over 50 active convivia (local groups), organising an exciting and varied programme of events to reconnect people with the food they are eating, how it is produced, why it tastes so good, how to cook it and the people that are producing, selling or cooking it. Slow Food, along with the local grassroots members, is working to increase awareness of the sustainability and fairness of food systems in a fun, interactive and often delicious way!
